BRITNEY: I am sad and lonely

Britney Spears has admitted that despite getting her life back on track since her public breakdown she still feels sad and lonely.

The superstar revealed all in a hotly-anticipated documentary for American MTV called Britney: For The Record, which was screened on Sky1 last night.

The singer, who is 27 today, explained the reasons behind her meltdown.

'[It was] a really bad time in my life… I'm not gonna sugarcoat it and say I was OK,' she admitted. 'Maybe I had traumatic stress. I just remember I did not want to be at home. When I was in my car, I was driving and I was going somewhere.'

The Womanizer singer also said her dream was to run away to a remote island with her two sons and a new man, but due to her enormous fame, she finds it hard to trust people.

'I let bad people in because I was lonely and I really paid the consequences for that big time,' she said.

'I am very protective of myself. Sometimes it can get kind of lonely.'

Britney burst into tears as she said that after her breakdown she was so controlled by doctors and lawyers, that she felt she couldn't be truly happy.

'You can't really go there in a complete state of happiness because you're scared it's going to be taken away.'

'So it's better just not to feel anything at all and to have hope to feel the other way.... When I tell people the way I feel, they hear me, but they're really not listening. They hear what they want to hear. They don't really listen to what I'm telling them.'

'It's bad. I'm sad,' she added sobbing.

And what did she have to say about the infamous head-shaving incident? She shrugged it off as her 'little bit of rebellion or feeling free'.

Madonna also featured in the 90-minute documentary saying that she felt maternal towards the Toxic singer.

'There is fragility about her and vulnerability about her that makes me feel maternally towards her,' said Madge.

Despite all this, Britney insists things are looking up.

'Everything is coming together right now. I'm ready to make this a really good phase in my life,' she added, 'I choose to be a happy person. I choose not to be a bitter person.'

Meanwhile, it was announced yesterday that Britney Spears was the most searched term on Yahoo for the fourth year in a row, even beating Barack Obama.

Will we ever get tired of Britney? We doubt it!
